Possibility snapshot of A., age 13
Colored pencil, archival ink, and gold pen on drawing paper, 6"x 8". "Possibility snapshots" are done every year or two to record a child’s inner as well as outer development. See www.innervisionportraits.com.
A. stands before a background scene of a big, peaceful pond in nature – she associates nature, specifically big ponds, with time to think and reflect.
The names in a heart around her head are the names of her best friends (blue) and family (red). They support her, are there for her, and surround her with love. It’s important to her to have time with friends old and new, and with the whole family — including Dad! She misses him but she’s proud of him doing what’s he’s doing in Iraq, and proud of herself for being able to get through his absence and over a lot of fears.
The yellow medallion at the top reveals her transforming “from a worm into a butterfly” — which is how she sees herself lately. She’s considering being an artist when she grows up… It’s fun to take raw materials and turn them into something of your own. (She also likes “weird clothes” that express something about the person wearing them.)
The blue medallion shows her pets; she likes animals, feels for them, and thinks it’s cool to help them, plus caring for them teaches her how to handle death. She might want to be a veterinarian when she grows up.
The green medallion contains the symbol for A’s new school. She takes school seriously and is proud of working hard at it and making new friends there. (She used to not like talking to people she didn’t know, because she was afraid they wouldn’t like her – but now she’s learned to open up a bit.)
The red medallion has her in mid-flip. She loves doing gymnastics – the thrill of being in the air and doing tricks, free from any worries or doubts, in her own world – it’s an experience of being placid and serene. Gymnastics also teaches her how to overcome her fears, and to know that she can handle things.
The words that frame the picture are A’s possibilities at age 13: the qualities she embodies when she’s being her best self. They are also what she can make available to herself and others at any time — the light in her that wants to shine.
